My first bob arrived courtesy of my mom and a kitchen chair. I was around six years old and swaddled in a towel while she snipped away with the kind of determination that only comes from reading too many parenting magazines. The result was somewhat neat and chin-length, topped with bangs that sat too many millimetres above my eyebrows. At the time, I thought it was deeply tragic. Now, decades later, I realize I was simply ahead of the trend curve.

From the geometric crops of the 1920s to the power cuts of the 90s and the modernized versions dominating Instagram today, the bob is a haircut that evolves rather than retires.

But there's one iteration that's the secret to thicker, healthier-looking strands—the curtain call bob, a style defined by a middle-parted bangs paired with a soft, slightly layered bob. And the best part? It's designed to make fine hair appear fuller and more bouncy.

However, the curtain call bob isn't pigeonholed to a singular style. It includes subtle variations, like a softly rounded U-shaped bang or a slightly grown-out Bardot-inspired bang. Both are modern takes on the classic middle-parted fringe, blending seamlessly into the bob while keeping the style light and face-framing.

"A U-shaped fringe is slightly shorter in the center and longer at the temples, which blends seamlessly into a bob. It softens the face and draws attention to the eyes and cheekbones without feeling heavy," explains hairstylist Lorraine Dublin.

"The center split keeps the style light, and it blends effortlessly into the front of the bob so it grows out gracefully," she adds.

And if your goal is to make thin hair appear fuller, a bob and middle-parted fringe is always a great place to start. "Shorter lengths instantly create the illusion of density, and adding a soft, face-framing fringe—something Bardot-inspired or lightly choppy—helps build even more shape around the front," hairstylist Jordanna Cobella tells me.

In terms of maintenance, Jordanna recommends avoiding overly sleek styling. "Air-dried textures with a bit of movement or a slight kick through the ends tend to make hair look much thicker than pin-straight styles," she says. This keeps the finish light, effortless, and much more voluminous.

So, if you're looking to level up your bob with a thicker, bouncier look for spring, why not try out a variation of the middle-parted fringed bob? As the old adage goes: new season, new style! And with this style, you'll always be ready for your curtain call.
